HFA Takes Action Against Ohio Hog Factory

This is an abridged copy of the full 77–page complaint to Canton, Ohio criminal prosecutor Frank Forchione regarding conditions at Wiles Farm.

wiles-crates

Beaten, bludgeoned to death, repeatedly shocked with an electric prod, strangled by hanging, starved, shot, drowned in their own urine and feces, cannibalized. The rescued animals we showed you yesterday survived in these unconscionable torture chambers for years.

These are the least graphic photos from the HFA petition we’re showing you here.

It’s our understanding that after the original airing of this investigation by WKYC reporter Bill Safos and the follow-up story that aired yesterday with Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the station has been swamped with calls and emails from horrified viewers around the country asking what people can do to help. We have a few suggestions:

  1. Hello,
I enjoyed the pics of the rescued pigs from Wiles farm. I am the employee who reported the Wiles farm. Some of the pigs shown are my pigs. Just wanted to correct one statement “Six pigs from inside this hog house of horrors are rescued. In loving memory of Gracie,”. Actually, I rescued 9 pigs plus Gracie. The story says only 6. Just thought I would let you know. The pigs rescued are Floppy, Dutchy, Taty, Cookie, Minnie Mae, Jimmie Bob, Penelope, Cricket, and Tootsie, and of course Gracie who passed away just 5 days after her rescue. Thanks for the story!
    Ingrid

  2. PFW Says:

Ingrid, thank you for this update and correction. We stand in humble awe of your bravery and self-sacrifice in bringing this case to light. May God bless you and keep you safe.

  3. If these idiots are going to use “Blunt Force ” as a treatment of Euthanasia they could at least make sure that the poor things are actually dead and not left quivering as they suffer and eventually die. I would like to take that guy who is beating that piglet and do the same to him.

  4. sandy johnson Says:

Ingrid – how did you manage to “rescue” 9 pigs? Did you take them home in your lunch pail? Seriously, were they sick and given to you or did you sneak them out the back door? Do you still have them?

  5. As a founder and member of The Coalition of Pig Sanctuaries, I’ve been following the Wiles’ situation very closely.

I have nothing but praise for Ingrid, who is a true advocate on behalf of the pigs that have been treated with cruelty beyond belief for so many years. The HFA has definitely stepped up to the plate with their widely publicized investigation and proof as to what has been taking place.

At this point, I pray that these despicable ‘people’ are closed down.

  6. Ingrid DiMarino Says:

    Sandy,
“Ingrid – how did you manage to “rescue” 9 pigs? Did you take them home in your lunch pail? Seriously, were they sick and given to you or did you sneak them out the back door? Do you still have them?”

Floppy was my first pig, she was purchased for $100. I used to have to play with the gilts to get them used to the breeders. Floppy was somewhat of a runt. I got attached to her and asked the owner if I could have her. He let me have (buy) her because all the other employees got a pig (to slaughter). Taty and Cookie were considered “non-conformists”, the other pigs beat them up, almost to their death, so they were going to slaughter. Each was bought for $200. Dutchy was waiting to go to slaughter, she was starving to death. I got her for free. Taty, Cookie and Dutchy were all in the sell pen with my Floppy, that’s where they kept her so she wouldn’t get bred. I would visit with Floppy and then I got attached to the others. Then, they were all moved to another barn and Minnie and Jimmie were thrown in with them. Minnie and Jimmie were considered “junk” pigs, they have belly ruptures. I got them for free. Penelope and Cricket didn’t go into heat, so they would be sold to slaughter, I bought them for $100 and $150. And Tootsie I got after I was fired. I told them there was one more pig I really wanted but she was pregnant. She was purchased for $600. She ended up not being pregnant. All the money was donated by caring pig people. There were many pigs I had named that got left behind. We just weren’t able to buy them all. Hopefully all the pigs on that farm will be free soon.
    Ingrid

  7. Ingrid DiMarino Says:

Sorry, I missed one of your questions..
    “Do you still have them?””

They are all currently staying in sanctuaries until I can find a place for all of us to go together.
    Ingrid

  8. Amy Says:

    Igrid,

OH laws are not tough enough. It appears that the Prosecutor will get Joe, Ken, and the other guy on misdemeanors not felonies. Small fines and a few days in jail won’t make them change. I pray that their farm is shut down; however, if it is not, Joe should not be allowed to work there any longer and someone on the outside should be allowed to show up unexpectedly and examine the farm. Keep fighting for the pigs. I wrote you a letter in the regular mail, did you get it? You are an angel to these pigs!!!

  9. Tamara Terell Says:

I am just sickend by this story. I live in Ohio and am very ashamed to say these people are from here. I hope these men are taken into an alley and beaten as well. Ya never know people dont forget!!!!!

  10. Dustin Grimm Says:

All of you are naïve tree huggers who don’t understand farming or raising livestock whatsoever. Pigs are meat animals made for raising, breeding, and eating. So Ingrid, if you want to try to rescue every pig from dying you had better have a lot of money and a lot of room to keep them. You are looking at this as if pigs were people, but they are not, they are animals. Sure nobody wants to see anything die, but the reality is that’s life. Why didn’t WKYC interview the vets that came and checked out the wiles farm and found NO evidence of abuse? This is all blown way out of proportion and it’s because of lunatics like Ingrid and the rest of you that write on this site. The truth is none of you know anything about raising hogs or managing a hog farm so don’t try to pretend like you do. The Wiles are good people who are working hard and doing their best to raise hogs, so leave them alone. Get a life and stop trying to be heroes because you are not.

    • alicia Says:

The video clearly shows Joe Wiles smiling and joking while “thumping” the piglets. Like I said below, it does say something about a person who ENJOYS killing an animal.

    • William Barnes Says:

Dustin, I can see how those who work in the farming business have a different viewpoint towards the animals they raise for food than use non-farming folks – that still doesn’t excuse abusive behavior. There is no need to be cruel, and the way hogs and piglets were treated at the Wiles Farm was just that – cruel.

I do have a CLUE, and I see people like Ken Wiles showing ZERO consideration of the sentience of these fellow creatures. Even if they will eventually be slaughtered for human consumption, there is no need to disrespect them while they are live. Give them a decent life, as best you can. Otherwise you just add more hate and violence to the world for no apparant reason.

  11. PFW Says:

Please refrain from personal attacks upon each other or we will have no choice but to close further comments. We’ve had to mod 3 already that require further proof of assertion and it’s not even lunchtime here. Umm…hummus…

  12. Dustin Grimm Says:

If you have something to say send it to dgrimm28@yahoo.com

  13. Amy Says:

    In response to Dustin Grimm,
We are not saying that people should not eat meat. You are correct pigs are not humans; however, they are animals that can feel pain and get hungry. They deserve at least the basics before they are slaughtered for food. This was not blown out of porportion.
Workers on that farm hammer pigs, hang them, shoot them for no reason, do not feed them, break their legs, don’t provide a clean place. What they are doing is illegal, that is why they have been charged. I hope God punishes them for what they are doing. It is unethical!!! YOu can breed pigs without abusing and starving them.

  14. Amy Says:

The Wiles would not be taking so much heat if they would just clean up thier farm and treat the pigs a little better. Not use them for target practice and throw them in a hole to die. Give them food, a clean place, more room, medications, and not throw them hard on a wall. I wish they were a pig and had to feel the pain that they are causing. Their farm would profit more from having healthy pigs so they could sell more. They need to change, but with hearts like that, I don’t if they can change.

  15. Cynthia Smith Says:

    Dustin Grimm (see statement above)
Thanks “Mr” Grimm for your comments, it only shows your ignorance and only makes me and other want to keep up our work. Slandering and saying the kinds of things about the people who want to make it a better and more compassionate world for animals, are not bothered by people such as you, it only makes our goals to make change stronger, so continue your rude comments if it makes you feel better!
And Ingrid, bless you – dont give up the fight animals lovers we are growing in numbers larger each day!
And I am proud that I was part of the staff of “Floridians for Humane Farms” I helped get the hog farms completely out of Florida and there are still none here…..what do you think of that “Mr” Grimm?
    Sincerely,
Cynthia Smith/Animal Rights Activist/Compassionate Person – SAVE THE PIGGIES!!!!!!!

  16. Librophile Book-Lover Says:

Ken Wiles & his son Joe Wiles must be prosecuted to the full extend of the law for their cruel animal abuse to send a message to all Factory Farms owners.

These two greedy individuals would torture, starve they pigs to death and wouldn’t spend a dime in vet care, because they did not perceive the pigs as sentient animals who can hunger or suffer.

For them, pigs are simply “stuff” and “things” to make money of … nothing more !!

As quoted by Ken Wiles: “Things die …This is not a big, happy, roly-poly pig farm.” … (AND) … “We’re not in the business of killing stuff that has value.”

They should never again be allowed to “raise” animals…or even own a dog or a cat. I sincerely hope that justice prevails.

The reason why this abuse went on for so long is because Ken Wiles’s daughter is a prosecutor in the office of Wayne County Prosecutor Martin Frantz and were protected by this good old boys network, from criminal charges.

Since then, the case was moved out of Wayne County and to Canton, Ohio and assigned to prosecutor Frank Forchione. Good work Ingrid and The Humane Farming Association. Good luck Mr. Forchione.

  18. animal-lover-too Says:

Wow, to say the Wiles were not prosecuted earlier because of their daughter would be slander if you have no proof. So, you can break the law? Who gave you permission? Obviously, you have no idea of how the legal system works. It works to be fair, so the Wayne County prosecutor’s office cannot prosecute a case against the immediate family of one of their lawyers. So, it got sent elsewhere. Happens every day, every state. Nothing new there. By the way, how would YOU kill a pig, since you’re not against eating meat and all……’cuz pigs are VERY difficult to kill…..so how would you do it? Have you ever? Have you ever run a pig farm? Please, speak from your experience on this issue…….

    • alicia Says:

Just want to express my opinion after watching the video. I am a meat eater and very aware that there will always be very unpleasant circumstances on a factory farm. What I did find appalling was the joy that Joe Wiles displayed when “thumping” the piglets. It does say something about a person who enjoys killing an animal. And that is what is shameful…

  19. Krista Says:

I am from GA and have only recently found out about the horors that took place on the Wiles farm through HFA (Humane Farming Association), an organization that I am a member of. I want to thank Ingrid for all that she did for the animals. Ingrid , you are a true HERO!! I also want to comment on one of the responses above. I believe that everyone is well aware that animals are not people but we also agree that no living, feeling thing, whether it be people or animals should be made suffer the way these animals did. Anyone that doen’t understand that is a lost cause in my opinion. This is a huge victory for the animals and again I want to say thank you for everyone who helped.

  20. LC Says:

I recently read the article in Animal People and was shocked to tears. I’d like to commend Ingrid and any others who were involved in the salvation of some of these animals. I’d also like to state that people like ‘Mr’ Grimm and ‘animal-lover-too’ should refrain from using this page if they are to refer to people as ‘naive tree-huggers’ or use bizarre illogical statements such as, ‘…pigs are VERY difficult to kill”. By stating things like these, you are showing yourselves up to be completely clueless about such issues.

  21. Kathy Says:

I would love to see these jerks on the street and they wouldn’t need a court of law!!

I would like to know who is running the farm while this case is ongoing.

  22. dale Says:

    To Dustin Grimm:
Don’t you think you should be afforded a safe, clean environment in which to do your job? A pig’s job may be to fill your belly but a pig is a living breathing creature that deserves respect simply because of the fact that it IS a breathing, living creature. If you suffered a stroke and lost the ability to speak, would it be OK for us to drag you around your house by your ear? Besides keeping our animals safe (yes, even those destined for slaughter) we also need to take steps to keep our children safe. The types of people that take advantage of those who cannot defend themselves are the kind that do not belong in society. Due to the statistically proven fact that animal cruelty goes hand in hand with sociopathic behavior such as rape, child abuse, and pedophilia, I personally believe that anyone found guilty of animal cruelty should be removed from the general population for psychiatric treatment. Strong words? Perhaps, but they have been toned down from what I really feel in my effort to make allowances for people. Mr. Grimm, I hope you realize that the ultimate sacrifice is death, and that the least you could do to show appreciation for those who die to fill your belly would be to speak up as an advocate for their health and well being while waiting to go to slaughter. Anyone who still holds to the archaic notion that “the pigs are going to die anyway, they are just animals” are behind the times. Take a gander at the YouTube video of Dr. Temple Grandin, an Agricultural Livestock consultant for the past thirty years. Her clients include such big names as McDonald’s and Wendy’s. And after listening to Dr. Temple explain the improvements that she’s made to slaughterhouses around the world, ask yourself this, “Ok, even if I don’t care about the pigs, isn’t it better to work smarter not harder?” Inhumane and unclean conditions just make for more work and less profit (sick animals) in the long run. I could say more, but I think if you don’t get it by this point you’re not actually processing the information on the screen. I wish you the best and hope that I may have opened your eyes and given you a new perspective on this whole thing. Thanks for reading.

  23. dale Says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoNErsJNPzw
I forgot to include the YOUTUBE link of Dr. Temple Grandin in my previous comment.

(By the way – Dr. Grandin is autistic, which gives her a keener sense of the cow’s perspective. An autistic person has difficulty filtering out stimuli, much like animals do. If you have a dog, you probably know what I mean. If ONE new thing shows up in the backyard, the dog discovers it and investigates it, no matter how small the new object may be. Animals can’t ignore things like we can. Everything is a stimulus. Because of the similarity in the way that livestock and autistic people process stimuli, Dr. Grandin has a better understanding of the kinds of simple improvements that will help ranchers lead their livestock to slaughter more calmly. The whole concept is fascinating. Enjoy the clip!)

  26. JIL Says:

I recently received information from HFA regarding this cruelty investigation on the Wiles Farm. I was sickened to read the facts and horrified at the graphic pictures. Nothing compared to the pain these poor animals are enduring. Animals do feel pain no matter what some ignorant people have responded on this site. So to realize that these pathetic excuses for humankind are merely going to receive a slap on the hand is absolutely wrong! I am returning the petition to revoke the fool Dr. Paul Ambrecht’s veterinary license. I only wished I could do more and that this farm would go bankrupt!!!!!!

  27. gabrielle Says:

I’ve seen alot of cruelty towards animals in my life, but this is unbelievable. How in god’s name can a human being torture these creatures and not feel anything. Are we that warped. Humans certainly are the cruelest animal, what these workers did is unthinkable, why would you make an animal suffer on purpose, what possible fun could you get from that. I’d like to tie a chain aroung their necks and hang them up and see how they like it, especially the fat, blond brush cut guy, he was enjoying it way too much. I know it says in the good book that “man shall have dominion over animals” but I think even god is ashamed at how we treat animals now. If you’re going to kill them, do it quickly and as painlessly as possible, not get a thrill out of their pain. I hope these people get whats coming to them, if not by our justice system then by divine intervention.

  28. Wendy, B.C. Canada Says:

I’m absolutely disgusted that those loser abusers got such lame fines. I’v been a vegetarian now for 40yrs and cant even phathom why people feel the need to eat an animal that’s actually far more intelligent than a dog. Gee, just cus it’s not all soft and fluffy like a puppy??? Whatever!! If I had it my way, I’d go find those guys and kick the living snot right outta them, but not before torturing them for awhile at least.
The video of those guys doing what they did to those pigs just sickens me to the point of wanting death to the abusers. I believe in karma and I hope to hell it comes around and kicks their asses with a deadly cancer of some sort.

  29. STAR Says:

You “macho” guys that feel the need to work at an animal slaughter facility so that you can torture animals for your own warped pleasure are as sick as Jeffery Dawmer! You have a need for power that you cant seem to get in the real world no matter what you do! You probably beat your spouse and children and/or molest them as well. I cant even imagine being the girlfriend or the wife of such a low life NOTHING that you are. You are actually nothing more than sicko weak little pussys and this is the only way (you think) you can have power over something/anything.(Until you get caught!) I wonder what you dream of at night (Oh!… never mind…that would be way too graphic to describe, and if you did confess to it you would probably be promptly arrested immediatly anyway. Hope you die a slow painful death you ugly pond scum.

  30. Don Pointer Says:

Ingrid…you surprise me. You have always had a love of animals but wow!!! I do agree with you that a humane way to kill the hogs is needed. With enough attention drawn to it, it will change. Human nature, however, is not likely to change, ever. I wish you the best.

  31. Jerry Batson Says:

I have just watched the show about the pig farm. I am so sorry that people that have not grown up in rural areas dont understand how livestaock are looked upon. Where I live we slaughter 25% of the countries fed beef every year. Every day more than 10,000 cattle are slaughtered for consumtion. We humans are omnivores. We eat meat, we always have. Some meat have feelings. I would say they all do. but what are we do do? They should have carried pistols in the video. At least the deaths would have been less cruel. They suck, for what they did.

  32. The Duke and Duchess of Manchester Says:

We can not stand by and watch these men be evil and not put in jail for what they do to animals.
They knew what they were doing they deserve to go to prison for life. If it were people they would be in jail for man slaughter. Animals can’t speak for themselfs….I have seen this as a young girl i quit eating meat from 5 years old i’am healthy and strong. I don’t need dead animals that died by the evil arm of a mad man i can do without eating a poor animal that cant fight back. By the way hunting is just another word for snyper. Unless you are in the woods dieing and must feed your family there is no need to kill a animal ever.

  33. Jean Says:

The Wiles Farm documentary was so very painful to watch. Ingrid and Pete you are absolutely amongst the best of the best here on planet Earth and I wish everything good for you in this life, you deserve it with your loving kind hearts and compassion for the animals. I have a very difficult time believing in the existence of “God” for the very reason that was displayed in this documentary. How humans can be so heartless when it comes to the animals is simply inconceivable to me, and why “God” if He exists allows it is most disturbing, as they cannot speak to us and they need us. I have been a vegetarian for the past 15 years and after watching this documentary I will NEVER again consume a piece of meat regardless of how great it smells. I cannot help but wonder what would it take to get all humans to open their hearts to the animals – they need us. Again, Ingrid, Pete, HBO and all involved, THANK YOU for bringing this situation to light and let’s hope for a better world for the animals be that they are in the wilderness, the artic, the jungle, etc. Please, everyone, let’s give the animals the respect, kindness and compassion they deserve.

  34. Derek Says:

I haven’t seen the end of the documentary yet, but it’s an impressive piece. I live with a vegetarian and I eat little meat. I’m going to adjust my eating habits to further avoid meat. I understand that not every livestock farm beats, kicks, prods, hangs, or otherwise so clearly abuses animals, but even the “good” farms typically keep animals in appalling conditions. It’s just business as usual. It’s disgusting beyond words to treat fellow animals in such a disrespectful, harmful manner. I hope that those who think animals don’t feel emotion or pain can somehow experience even a small portion of what we humans do to other animals. Thank you Ingrid for bringing this to light!

  35. Patrick Says:

The accused getting off with such light consequences, the bought and paid-for expert wittness, a local judge’s obvious bias against outsiders, his complete indifference and allowance of nothing short of a kangaroo court under his supervision. All that just might be the best thing that could have happened for the overall progress of animal rights. These pitiful characters just put theirselves and their stone age mindset on full display for the world to see and recognize as the systemic problem that exists within these communities. From the lowliest offender, to the shameful defense attornies, all the way up to the judge himself, they have shined a convenient light in their own direction for future prosecutors in future cases to use as evidence to demonstrate the cause behind this unconscionable animal suffering.

  36. Jean Says:

It has been most difficult to focus on much of anything since viewing the Pierce Farm Watch last night. Watching the abuse of horses a few months ago on Real Sports almost pushed me over the edge, now this. How humans who inflict pain and abuse on animals sleep at night is incomprehensible to me. There are indeed some very evil sick minds amongst us. I wish with all my heart the tables could be turned and humans who practice such could experience what they inflict on the animals for the sake of filling their already bloated bellies. With the obesity crisis it is quite obvious humans do not need to consume nearly as much meat as they think they do. Couple that with greed and the situation is simply disastrous for the helpless animals. How awesome would it be if those endowed with more money than they know what to do with, instead of purchasing 3,4,5 6 homes and a garage full of vehicles (how insane) would do something truly awesome by opening up their hearts to something bigger by helping the animals have a better life and ending their abuse and suffering. That is my wish for a better world, a better tomorrow. How many more helpless animals have to endure this insanity and why cannot the supposedly more intelligent being (man) stop the insanity.

  37. johanna Says:

Ingrid you are an Angel sent from Heaven. God have mercy on those poor creatures Tortured in “Pete’s” heroic pursuit to capture the truth. Thank you HFA The Production company and HBO for exposing (I’m sure) common practices in raising animals for food. Mr. Grimm your a moron It’s a vegetarian life for me. STOP FACTORY FARMING.

  38. Clare Says:

Hello! I am so grateful to you for doing what you did. How can anyone treat creatures with heartbeats that way? I would love to help putting those torture factories out of business. I wish I could rescue a few piglets but I live downtown Chicago. You are definitely an angel from heaven. Kudos.

  39. Maria Says:

I cannot believe that such things could happen at this time, killing innocent hogs, or any animal. The people who worked al Wiles Farm should go to jail, they committed crimes. Whether we term the being an animal or human, a live where willingly taken away.
All animals should be treated with care as we should care for every other being. If it difficult to live with animals then they should have found another job. Sad to see things taken place in USA.

  40. Bailey Says:

Thank you to Pete and Ingrid for their dedication to exposing cruel factory farm practices. I am also glad that those who made the film are able to reach such a broad audience by airing on HBO.I wish people would recognize that it is not always a matter of people choosing not to eat meat,(as the defense attorney in the film said) but that humans have a responsibility to treat the animals we use/consume humanely.I don’t eat pork, chicken, or beef-I like the way I look and feel better by eating veggies and fish-but people who choose to eat anything deserve to know how it came to be on their plate. The HBO documentary reinforced my feeling that most people would not purchase food if it were connected to a farm like the Wiles’ and knew what happened to the animals housed there.People who claim to be “good”, “law-abiding” farmers and still practice this cruelty need to read their Bibles.God gave you rules for how to treat animals -even if Ohio didn’t.The only things that motivate the Wiles farm, and others like them, are greed, greed, and callousness.

  41. CHARLIE k Says:

I am not a vegetarian and do not intend to be anytime soon. Seems to me the farmers have options on raising and killing the animals. They could do it in a way that will minimize suffering (feed them, and provide a little more room for them), and when necessary euthanize them with the quickest least painful way. These farmers seem to be less than animals themselves, no feelings. Even the lawyers who defended the farmers could not be that stupid to think this is the right way to do things. It pains me to think that for a dollar we needed to go up and above the primary goal of providing food, and in addition cause the hogs the most pain possible in attaining that goal. Now being an old man, I do believe later some, but not all of these young guys will regret what they did and how they did it. I think my difference with the farmers would be, give up a couple of bucks and not torture the animals. Make a little less profit to prevent suffering. How much is it worth to have a clear conscience? You have to wonder about anyone in this argument who defends this, and could not figure out what is wrong at that farm.

  42. Lana Says:

I just wanted to know if the farmers are still abuseing animals the same way? Who is watching the farm now? How do they know the animals are being treated better? Looks like they got away with murder
and just got a 200 dollar fine? Are they still hanging animals for fun…. are they still smaching baby pigs heads up aganist the walls and laughing?
Do they have sex with them to wouldn’t doubt it at all…….Do they treat the family dog ok? How do they treat the wife? Really i cant believe the pigs are in there care we need to do more now? ASAP

  43. John Says:

Do they have sex with the animals too? I wouldn’t doubt it at all….How do we stop this abuse now?
Who is watching these creaps? How do we know they arent still slaming the pigs heads on the doors and laughing right now? We need cameras up to see how they are doing why didn’t the wonderfull judge ask for that? Are they still hanging the animals? They need to be watched and i can’t believe the animals werent taken away from these evil sick men! Sunday ham isn’t that important anymore we need to stop these retards now! How can we do that?

  44. Karen Oppenberg Says:

I have not stopped thinking about those poor defenseless pigs since viewing that disturbing documentary. It was like a Hog Concentration Camp; dead bodies being discarded in a pit to rot; beings with intelligence and feelings being starved, beaten and abused. How could that judge not have convicted on the hanging of that Sow? God is not the problem, it is man. Have we become so greedy and unfeeling not to see the inhumanity of this? Anyone who has a dog or cat knows that animals have are cognizant of their surroundings, that they feel pain. People have the right to eat meat if they want, but there has to be a better way of caring for these animals. There is not need for horrible cruelty and neglect. I thank God for people like Ingrid and Pete and the people at HBO. This world is a better place because of them.

  45. billy Says:

you people must not live in the real world. i’ve been on their farm in high school and have seen how they work everyday from before sun rise to sun set. maybe if any of you worked half as hard as a farmer you would understand the pain and frustration that comes with the territory. when your product is linked to a market where some months you may barely break even. anyone knows that owning your own business is hard work and running a farm is no different (except you don’t get to sit in a chair all day to make decisions).
do i agree with everything that happened on that farm… no. should they do better to make sure this doesn’t happen again… yes. but you also need to realize that doing these things could cause your “meat” to go up in price. but most ppl on here posted they are veg. anyways.
oh yeah, i’ve never seen so many people on a post who couldn’t spell commonly used words or who blast other people for saying “have you ever killed a pig?” they were asking a reasonable question. obviously nobody who has posted on this blog has ever farmed or been around the farming business.

  46. Patrick Says:

I am not a vegetarian and I have worked on a cattle ranch. The toughest job imaginable. What I saw on those videos and pictures of the Wiles farm was disturbing. It was what I saw on other cattle ranches and farms. The behavior made no common sense unless one views it from the standpoint of a person who’s been anesthetized by watching others do it for weeks or months until it then becomes okay and is accepted as the normal way animals are to be treated. An individual will eventually side with the group and grow numb rather than follow his common sense instict at the risk of remaining an outsider. The Wiles farm is a concentration camp and arguments related to economy as being the reason behind this only proves this point and calls into question those making that arguement. This is the identical numbness that was the major component of human rights abuses for thousands of years, until just recent global legislation of the last 50 years. Ingrid and Pete, you are modern day saviors. One day your work will have widespread effect. Thank you.

  47. Carol Hannan Says:

I just wanted to say. Thank you whistle blowers, from the bottom of my broken heart.
I saw the HBO documentary the other PM and have VOWED to not eat pork, beef, chickens or turkeys ever again. It is my only revenge to these ignorant, greedy, insensitive ass holes. I will not feed them and their actions any longer by buying their products. Hopefully, eventually, everyone will become fully aware and so disgusted by the absolute cruelty of animals that they will have to find another business to go in to. I am also disgusted by the verdict that “these people” got from the corrupt “rural” judicial court. I was in absolute SHOCK that nothing happened. A slight slap on the wrist of that mean, UGLY to the core, heartless bastard. I am so disappointed in these humans. May they eventually see the horror and pain they have caused and be tortured by their conscience daily. I think they are all very SICK in the head and need therapy as to what makes them think they can do this to animals. I hope they soon can feel some of their own personal physical harm of what it feels like to be treated like that, …then, also, lose all their busine$$ as a result of HBO’s documentary… meaning, all of the audience stops buying meat to eat. It won’t be easy for me to be a vegetarian, but seeing these disgusting people sure made it a hell of a lot easier. I know they don’t care, they won’t change, they think they are soooo cool to treat they poor helpless animals this way. Well, I will do my part to help shut them down. … I want to thank the kid who went undercover to video these actions. He is a hero. To make himself experience this stuff, as it happens, to show the TRUTH, takes such courage and unbelievable restraint and heatache. Wow. Just know, you made an impact. It touched me… it changed my life. I will scream this out from this day forward. I will volunteer my talents, time, and donations to help get this message out. Thank you again, and hopefully, farmers will “smarten up” vs. being such ignorant, backward, classless, heartless, disgusting human beings and clean up their act, get a heart, or be driven into poverty…. I am livid, seething with anger…. hopefully HBO and HFA has created more of us, to help make changes in this industry happen!!!

  48. mike brine Says:

Hey to all the farmers and peopl who think they are farmers You guys are FUCKED!!! I know farming all to well and i tell you what what happened on the wiles farm IS cruelty The defendants are all asshole especially that dusty kid smiling and laughing. I tell you all what i used my real name in here so anyone of u fuckers can look me up and i tll you what if you were up here in canada id give you a chance at me cause id whip ur asses and cause u twice the pain u delivered to those pigs You guys have inraged me so much. I wish i was still trucking cause id come down there and tell you face to face and see if you can handle yourselfs against someone who CAN defend themselfs cause id tell you whatelse id beat u down and I hope someone would hang u from that forklift till u were about a sec away from dying let u recover a bit and do it again. The only solice i take in this is on judgement day hope u really like hot wheather cause ull be in hell .. As for law enforcement if you read this I am venting not to say if they came up here i wouldnt kick there ass cause i would . Fuck the wiles and to the people who brought this out in the open thanks we need more people out there like you

  49. Paul Aiello Says:

I would love to put Ken Nile’s son in those pigletts sitautions….He looks like a screaming chump

  50. Lorette LeMond Says:

You do not have to be a tree hugger or a vegitarian to be a good person.Animals can be farmed in a clean and humane way. It just takes a good person, with brains and a heart. These people are obviosly ignorant and have no decency, the funny thing is they probably go to church (crazy) and God has nothing but sorrow for the things they do.These people are surely Republicans and so are the towns folk, the Judge was a coward ,he new better,he’s not ignorant,But the real responsibility here is what will we do? Will we stand up and fight or say how sad and move on ..”The Silence of the Pigs”. Wake up people.!Until we respect all life we will suffer,The Wiles are disgusting people ,what comes around goes around. They will all get thiers, but if we as a people don’t demand change it won’t come.

  51. F. Friedrich Kling Says:

My God, the Wiles unspeakable cruelty coupled with the complete failure of the criminal justice system has shook me to the core. Sadly, the Wiles case is not an isolated incident. As the young and heroic investigator pointed out, ‘animals need my help because they can’t defend themselves nor do they have the ability to speak-up.’ Is it really any surprise mankind is on a collision course with oblivion. As the great writer Kurt Vonnegut noted, “The good Earth- we could have saved it, but we were too damn cheap and lazy.”

  52. Carol Hannan Says:

Very well said, Mike Brine, Lorette LeMond, and F. Friedrich Kling. I pray that the outrage builds beyond control, that other vets, Judges, the “good police”, lawyers, maybe even OBAMA!!! … sees this HBO doc and and that “finally” things happen in a HUGE way, …strict laws, tight regulations and ENFORCEMENT and better yet, the farmers themselves change their minds. (Yeah, I know, they won’t, they are beyond ignorant!!! – they all grew up – probably interbreeding, being taught from their useless parents that all of this is A-OK…) What we need and would be so productive is if one of them, or all of these criminals realized their horror and actually felt bad and started to speak out–NO–SCREAM OUT.. against this type of farming towards chickens, turkeys, cows, and pigs… NOW THAT WOULD BE EFFECTIVE, CREATIVE, HELPFUL and LOVELY!!! But… this will take tooo much time.. too many autracities, DAILY.. and… Yes a great quote Friedrich, from Kurt Vonnegut, but now we should add “GREED” to “too damn cheap and lazy.”..

  53. Karen Oppenberg Says:

I am not a vegetarian and I want to share a few paragraphs from the “Animal Welfare Approved” website. They have the strictest standards as far as farming and animal welfare is concerned. This gave me a measure of comfort knowing that there were farmers who were decent, good people who cared about our animal friends. Feel free to explore their website.
“Now there is a label with nothing to hide. We are proud of our Animal Welfare Approved standards, the most rigorous and progressive animal care requirements in the nation. Today, hundreds of participating family farms are putting each individual animal’s comfort and well-being first. The program benefits all of us with the simple understanding that our own best interests are intrinsically linked to animals and the environment.
These standards seek to ensure that cattle graze on green pastures; sows can build nests before giving birth; ducks are always able to swim in clean water; and chickens can forage, dust-bathe and spread their wings. But the Animal Welfare Approved seal is not just a list of rules. It is a philosophy of respect that provides animals on the farm with the environment, housing and diet they need to engage in essential instinctive behaviors, thereby promoting physiological and psychological health and well-being.”

  54. Danielle Kaley Says:

What a woman you are Ingrid!! People get so caught up in who is right and who is worng that everyone forgets what is right and what is wrong!! I understand that animals being used for food will never end!! But when a farmer can stand and laugh at bashing a pigglets head in and watch it still quiver there is something worng with that person! These are the types of hillbillys we read about beating their wife and kids!! However, the pigs win in the end when all these fatties get clogged arteries and heart attacks!! REVENGE, SWEET SWEET PIG REVENGE!!! My name is Danielle Kaley and I choose to fight this fight!! WAY TO GO “PETE”!!! Its good to see someone who was actually raised to be a MAN!!

  55. F. Friedrich Kling Says:

Right on, Mike! The Wiles and their minion Dusty are coward pussies. Anybody who quivers with joy at torturing harmless animals unable to defend themselves is low-down scum. I would love to come face-to-face with any one of these assholes and kick the living shit out of them. I am still so pissed that I can’t see straight. And to those folks who say, ‘it’s just an animal’, remember that these people do not stop there. When they are unable to get off torturing to death animals their next victim is a woman or a child. Now am I getting your attention.
To the fullest extent possible, I pledge not to eat meat unless I know the animal was raised and slaughtered free from abuse and torture. We would put the Wiles and other like-minded factory farming monsters out of business if we all banded together and demanded this. Now that would be satisfaction!

  56. Carol Hannan Says:

I agree Friedrich, YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT!!!!! PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS… Some suggestions,.. We have to look at the packaging at the markets, not just buy anything we see..AND..all steak houses, ALL restaurants, even FAST FOOD places… Like McDonalds, we have to force them to stop supporting these HORRENDOUS TORTURE FARMS, we have to find out and make sure they are purchasing their products from the “good” farms… I am not really sure there are ANY… but, I know the entire world is NOT going to stop eating meat, so this is a great solution for NOW!!!! It all makes me SICK. That is why since I saw the HBO documentary, I am vegetarian. But I am going to start asking all restarurants I go to about their meat products and what farms they get them from… start making all businesses who make their $$$ offf of meat RESPONSIBLE for who they are supporting. Make them put a sign on their front door they don’t support these ass holes… THAT IS A BIG HELPFUL SOLUTION.. this will teach a lesson to the Wiles, since we, regretfully, can’t hang THEM from the forklifts!!!!! Tooo bad for that!!!!

  57. BigUgly Says:

If someone gave me the phone number to contact the Wiles, or better yet, an address to their farm or home, I would gladly take some DIRECT action. If anyone has contact info, say so and I will give you my email address as well as Paypal (or money order, whichever you prefer) $75.

Thank you and God Bless (except these losers.)

  58. Matt Says:

Just watched the HBO special. Horrific what those people did. The scenes with the forklift and head bashing were disgusting. Those people should be put in jail for the rest of their lives.

  59. ArmOfJustice Says:

BigUgly, send me an e-mail if your still interested in that information you asked for, I can help you out. Or you can contact me on AIM at ” forum42087 “.
    ( E-MAIL = forum42087@hotmail.com )

***Look forward to hearing from you***

  60. Carol Hannan Says:

No, they should be put to sleep, oh, no, don’t they call it EUTHENISED? Such a nice term for what they say they were doing to the poor animals. Of course, we can’t do that to them, only animals. With “zero” consequence especially in the “rural” areas of the IGNORANT. Still seething, after a week from seeing that HBO documentary. I will NEVER get over what I saw. I have been a vegetarian ever since and feel really great about it. I have the ass holes at Wiles to thank for that. That so called “father” of the spineless “dork” should whip him good for ruining his business and getting us all so riled up.. Ha haa., I bet he’s gunna get a big whoopin from his inbreed daddy, probably not his daddy, probably his momma’s brother is is daddy… ha ha.. I know, I know, pretty harsh.. not harsh enough, nothing harsh enough. Hope Big Ugly gets the address.. would LOVE to see the news on FOX channel, and maybe even dorkwaaadd Rush Limp Dick announcing how his kind got theirs. ha haa.. Damn, I am still sooo mad. I THANK HBO and all the producers and the wonderful kid who video taped this outrage from the bottom of my heart. Gosh, wow, so great what you all did. Please track these people every step of the way to poverty hell and jail!!!

  61. Carol Hannan Says:

Hope nobody gets in trouble for giving “them” what they deserve. The best revenge is to get the world to stop buying their products and to pass the word to all we know and to work constructively to help change the lameass laws and the lameass farmers to wake up and change their ways… Sadly we can’t physically do anything to these retards…but we can get them where it hurts, their greeedy bank accounts.

This is the most pathetic inhumane treatment of animals I have ever seen. Being number 4 on the smart chain should have some value even if these animals are being produced for food. Ohio needs to wake up. Mr. Wiles and Mr. Miller, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

      I am interested.

    • Jennifer Says:

      I am interested

  63. F. Friedrich Kling Says:

    Hey BigUgly and ArmofJustice,

Be careful! We know for a fact that the county in which the Wiles and their lackey, Dusty Stroud, live is corrupt based on the sham trial in which the judge, Stuart K. Miller, completely ignored the overwhelming evidence and allowed his friendship with the defendants and their lawyers to dictate a finding of “not guilty”. Consequently, be very wary of entrapment!!!!!!!

  64. Carol Hannan Says:

Just put the address and phone number up on here, so we can send it to all our friends and their friends, and their friends, and … this way we can send them “WISH YOU WERE HERE” postcards that have gorgeous photos of the STATE PEN!!! It would be great to see how they would be treated in their cages.

  65. Mad from Nebraska! Says:

I watched Death on a Factory Farm for the first time on HBO and i have to say how digusted i am!!
I am not an animal rights activist or investigator, i do eat meat and could never imagine being a vegetarian, but i do have to say, the handling of these animals was unreal! I am still in disbelief! Shame on you Ken, Joe and the other crack head who thinks they did nothing wrong. Yes, pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys.. etc were put on this earth to feed us, but does that mean you get to treat them anyway you want???? Where is your conscience??
How would you like it if someone came along and grabbed your legs and smashed your head against a concrete wall? These are living breathing animals that deserve decent treatment while they are still alive. You better pray to God and ask for his forgiveness for being a cold hearted snake to these innocent animals and for you to stand there and laugh and say “oh let him bleed out” ARe you the devil or what?
Shame shame shame on you! I hope you dont come back a pig or cow in your next life…. Karma will come back to haunt you!

What warms my heart is that so many people care what happened. Even in the UK people are writing about it. The thing we have to remember is that the Wiles farm is not the only one, remember that stupid, imbecile Sarah Palin standing in front of a turkey being hung upside down being slaughtered for thanksgiving???? I am absolutely blown away by the way some people are so oblivious to how cruel it is for us to eat meat to begin with. And that bitch, didn’t blink an eye. What a complete DORK!!!! A week ago I ate chicken, steaks, burgies all week long. It finally hit me how even the chickens for their eggs, the cows for their milk are absolutely abused and I help perpetuate it by not watching out and only purchasing from the “good” farms. Yes, I will only buy cage free from now on, but I can not add to these living creatures pain and suffering any longer. I finally turned vegetarian. Disgusting humans are the criminals, and the wonderful humans screaming out are the heros, along with the courageous people who continually expose this bullshit. Just my extra 2 cents. Oh, and yes, I am encouraged by the outrage and know they will not live another day without the fear of someone giving them what they deserve. That alone is some slight justice.

  69. Jennifer Says:

I watched Death on a Factory Farm last night and I am disgusted at these ‘farmers’. They are not ‘farmers’ but ignorant, uneducated, mentally ill people who are tortuers. They need to be put in jail. The crooked legal systam that aquitte them ought to be ashamed of themselves. How do they sleep at night? As humans, it is our duty to treat with kindness and no ill will towards animals. I can’t believe that our government allows this to go on. It’s sad and needs reform.

  70. Francesca Says:

Having just seen this documentary, I am in awe of “Pete” and of Ingrid. What brave and dedicated people they are. As for the Texas Chainsaw family – does it get any worse? The Wiles are a nasty piece of work and that crackhead employee with the facial ticks is just plain scary. Does anyone know what is going on at that farm now? Has anything changed?

  71. Francesca Says:

OK – here is what most disturbs me – the unmitigated glee on the inbred face of Joe Wiles as he gleefully smashes tiny piglets’ heads against brick walls and floors to rid the farm of the poor little creatures deemed not fit enough to bring in money. Does this monster have a wife? Children? Who would be attracted to such a psycho?

  72. carol hannan Says:

Why these people are still alive, in fact, still actually walking around, still working, still killing these poor animals everyday at this FUCK FARM, is beyond me. This is what they do and actually get paid for, everyday… even after the HBO documentary… this shit is still going on… the HBO documentary, and the judicial system has not stopped anything, nothing has stopped the killing and torture…maybe someday we could watch them hang from a forklift and examine how “is it painful” or not… maybe HBO will produce a wonderful follow-up documentary with that. I bet they even fuck the pigs every chance they get — they are such scums of the fucking earth!!!

  73. Tricia Says:

I am shocked!! I can not even express what I need to say.

  74. carol hannan Says:

I know Tricia, this is all absolutely gut wrenching. The unbelievable disappointment in these so called humans, is mind blowing…. and I just read Dustin Grimm’s idiotic comments… no wonder his last name is Grimm. He’s not only grimm, he is pathetic grime. GET WITH IT you absolute dorkwaddd. How you can actually watch what they do, and defend them…wow, you ignorant shit. The reason I no longer spend time articulating in a kind way is because none of you “get it”.. you are way tooo uneducated to understand, to insensitive, absolutely too BLIND to see your ways, and change. Ingrid, wow, I feel so bad for you to have to go through all of this sad, horrendous stuff. My heart goes out to you and I am in awe of you!!!! I wouldn’t be able to do what you did. I would have had to runnnnn away. The courage you have is absolutely AMAZING… A true hero, wow!

    • F. Friedrich Kling Says:

As a person who grew up on a Missouri cattle ranch I would encourage all meat eaters to personally witness the slaughter of animals. The meat eater needs to understand all that entails the raising and slaughter of animals on an industrial scale. I hated the slaughter and as a consequence I have severely curtailed the amount of meat I consume. Nobody can speak with credibility on this subject unless the butchering is experienced on a personal bases.

  75. Carol Hannan Says:

Yes, F. Friedrich Kling, I agree.. if people saw farms overall, think of how many vegetarians there would be and how much less daily misery, torture, horror, pain and agony for calfs, cows, little chicks, chickens, turkeys and pigs. Think of how it would change the world.

  76. eric stanis Says:

Does anyone know an organization who efforts are concentrated on the proper care for farm animals??

I can not find one like the ASPCA that is large enough and with a combined effort to end this cruelty

    • F. Friedrich Kling Says:

There certainly is and kudos to you for asking. The Humane Farm Association was the not-for-profit organization that brought the Wiles torture chamber to justice. As a consequence I sent the Humane Farm Association a contribution and I am certain they would be grateful for your support since funding is scarce.

      • F. Friedrich Kling Says:

Here’s the Wiles contact information. Let these assholes know how you feel.

  78. mona Says:

IM just curious as to how many of you out here outraged at this HBO special are as outraged about abortions? It seems to me that its ok for the masses to kill unborn humans becaues its a “womans choice” but God forbide someone kills an animal!! If its cruelty whatever, but lets get our priorities straight first, I still done see how its a “womans choice” to kill her own flesh and blood when there are ways of preventing pregnancy, and dont go on about, “in the instences of rape and insest its always been about birth control and all of you freaks know it, but its justified to protect animals… what is wrong with society that animals take precidence over human beings… is it really that right is wrong and wrong is right, and that people will have an unnatural affection toward aninmals?!! Come on people, when is a pig a human child… what is wrong with all of you… my God my God why have you forsaken us… oh I know its cause we’ll kill our own childern for our own selfishness and hold lessor, I said it, lessor beings higher then your beloved creation… you people need a coming to Jesus moment… youre outraged about what? that pigs are killed… what about genecide all over this EARTH?!!! what about all of the women that are brutalized because men feel that they have the right to? What is wrong with you people.. oh I know its because you are all spoiled Americans that havent had to beg for bread or sell yourself for a few dollars to keep a family of 7 alive… GROW UP!!!! life and death!!! if its not you than figure yourself happy…what are you all going to do about it anyway except Bitch like little children. LIFE IS HARD and then you die… I wish you all would fight for all of the homeless kids in the US as you are fighting for PIGS… most of you probably have some of your own families struggling but dont give a CRAP… its not Animals….

    • F. Friedrich Kling Says:

      Mona:

Oh I see, Mona, unless “I have begged for bread or sold my body to keep a family alive” I am a spoiled American.

Get a life you stupid and silly girl.

    • Francesca Says:

Mona – you are on the wrong site – this is about ANIMALS – not HUMANS. Go preach somewhere else (hopefully not in my vicinity).

  79. Carol Hannan Says:

Mona, you are on the wrong blog, you ugly to the core idiot. Obviously you didn’t see the HBO documentary or you would be as OUTRAGED AS WE ARE. So shut your idiot mouth and go watch it, if you can. It takes courage to watch it, and after you do, you can come apologize to all of us and to the ones who went through the agony of documenting this. My wish is that “you people” would take your “egotistical” bitching to your own republican blog site. As far as priorities, ALL OF IT is a priority, yes, you dumb ass, even helpless animals!!!!!!!!!!! Even pigs! You aren’t any better than a pig. How dare you say so. Just because you can kill for your food, and you are a human does not give you the right to torture anything like these fucks did. Yes there is outrage for the genocide happening as we speak, outrage for all of it, especially about Bush killing innocent men, women and children based off of a total lie, but for you to lash out at US on this blog, who are trying to give helpless animals a voice and some recourse vs. these freak-farmer-assholes, honey, you are the one who is WRONG. Now go take your outrage back to the farm country. Obviously you are one of THEMMMMMMM!

  80. Steven M Says:

The “men” that work on wiles farm have no man-qualities. If you think it’s cruel what these freaks are doing to these hogs and piglets wait until you see what happens to them. You be the judge.

  81. Dick Trickle Says:

The undercover man on HBO’s documentary, his legal team, and anyone else sticking there noses in the Wiles private business ought to get a gender change. Mistreatment of the pigs isn’t right but in the end they appear to be in worse shape when I have them on a breakfast sandwich and my dog consumes them in the form of pellets. Get over it, get a life of your own.

    • F. Friedrich Kling Says:

Oh, Dickie boy, what an intelligent comment that, “anyone sticking their noses in the Wiles private business ought to get a gender change.” When I read you statement I thought of my grandfather who would respond to you with, “You can’t fix stupid.” Try a thought experiment: If an extra-terrestrial life form decided to farm humans for consumption and your family members were treated in the same cruel and painful manner as the Wiles treated their livestock, I’ll sure bet you would change your ignorant rant. Hopefully you will be judged by the Almighty with the same consideration you are judging the Maker’s other creations.

  82. Dick Trickle Says:

God made pork so we can consume it. God made animals like dogs so we can enjoy them as pets. If you think what you witnessed is cruel, then perhaps you should get a tour of Swift & Company and you’ll go into cardiac arrest.

  83. Thomas Hansson Sweden Says:

Dick Trickle, a boy named after his personality.
The pigs are treated worse than animals in experiments.
    Are you stupid, fucking redneck………
if i only knew were you live i would fucking hurt you so bad………..

  84. Leslie Perry Says:

I want to praise Ingrid for what she’s done! I didn’t get a chance to read ALL these comments, but I intend to. I just want to say that I do eat pork. But the pigs should NEVER be handled this way! I understand that these are livestock animals, but there is no excuse for the treatment they suffered. We once leased a 400 acre farm to a man who raised cows for slaughter. But these cows had a really good life. They had plenty to eat, room to roam, and company. Even the ones who went to slaughter (the steers) had a pretty good 18 months or so. I could have NEVER tolerated them standing in crates the way they had these pigs! I believe that if you don’t have the facilities to raise those pigs in proper conditions, maybe you should be doing something else. It’s the “Humane” Farming Association…not the “Don’t eat meat” association. They aren’t a bunch of nuts like PETA. They just believe that the animals should be fairly treated while they’re alive. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
